Reflecting on the Journey of Women in Society

March 5, 2025

Every year, on March 8th, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global occasion to recognise women’s achievements, resilience, and contributions throughout history. It is a day to honor progress, reflect on challenges, and advocate for a more equitable future. It stands as a powerful reminder of women’s collective strength and the incredible strides made in society.

Throughout history, strong and inspiring women have broken barriers, defied expectations, and worked tirelessly to pave the way for future generations. Women have balanced demanding careers with family responsibilities, mentored others in professional spaces, and challenged societal norms. Yet, despite their resilience and determination, struggles and systemic barriers have persisted, making the path to progress more difficult than it should have been.

A Journey of Struggle and Triumph

The fight for gender equality has been long and arduous. Women have had to battle for fundamental rights; the right to vote, the right to education, the right to work, and the right to autonomy over their bodies. Just over a century ago, suffragettes marched, protested, and sacrificed to ensure women’s voices were heard in political spaces. Their courage and tenacity laid the foundation for the rights that many enjoy today.

Over time, women have continued to break barriers in various fields. Society has witnessed extraordinary milestones; from women entering male-dominated industries to leading governments and launching successful businesses. Icons such as Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai, and countless others have demonstrated that women are forces of change, capable of transforming the world.

The Evolution of Women in Society

Significant progress has been made regarding gender equality, but challenges remain. Women today have more opportunities than ever before, yet they continue to face gender pay gaps, workplace discrimination, and societal pressures. Despite these obstacles, they continue to rise, shattering glass ceilings and proving their capabilities in all aspects of life.

One of the most inspiring shifts in recent years has been the increasing representation of women in leadership roles. Female CEOs, politicians, and entrepreneurs are no longer the exception but are becoming the norm. The corporate world recognises the value of diversity, and organisations strive to create more inclusive environments. It is empowering to witness women mentoring, uplifting, and advocating for one another in rare ways.

The Power of Community and Support

One of International Women’s Day’s most beautiful aspects is its ability to unite people. Women supporting women is a powerful force, and the impact of female-led communities is transformative. When women uplift one another, incredible things happen; confidence grows, ambition flourishes, and societal norms are challenged.

Mentorship has immense power, providing young girls and women with role models they can admire. Seeing someone who reflects their aspirations achieve great things sends a message that success is attainable. Representation matters, and it is crucial to continue creating spaces where women’s voices are amplified and celebrated.

The Role of Men in Gender Equality

While International Women’s Day celebrates women, it also fosters inclusivity. Gender equality is not solely a women’s issue; it is a societal issue that requires the involvement of everyone, including men. Male allies play a crucial role in dismantling systemic barriers and advocating for a more equal world. When men stand with women, they reinforce the message that fairness, respect, and equal opportunities should be universal rights.

Fathers who encourage their daughters to dream big, husbands who support their wives’ ambitions, and male leaders who promote workplace diversity all contribute to a culture of equality. This is not about competition; it is about collaboration. A world that uplifts women thrives.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Women’s Empowerment

As International Women’s Day is celebrated, attention must also turn toward the future. What kind of world should be created for the next generation of women? A world where gender does not define opportunities, where women do not have to fight twice as hard for the same recognition, and where respect, dignity, and equality are the standards, not the exceptions.

To achieve this, continued efforts must be made to challenge stereotypes, advocate for policy changes, and ensure that education and opportunities are accessible to all women, regardless of their background. Social progress requires constant effort, and every individual must play a part in pushing forward.
